Talk about townDurango High School students honored for shutter-work

Great photographs leave a powerful impression.

Two Durango High School students proved they have an eye for the memorable shot by winning in the regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Freshman Aubrey Hirst received two Gold Key Awards for her pieces, “Branded” and “Who I Am,” and an honorable mention for “Once Upon a Time.” Senior Julia Ion scored a Gold Key Award for her “Fashionably Portland.”

Teacher Eileen Mondino submitted 12 pieces of student work from DHS.

Aubrey and Julia are contenders to be national medalists, which will be announced March 14.

Last year, there were more than 300,000 teacher-nominated entries in the 29 categories.

The girls are joining august company.

The awards have been given since 1923, and among the alumni are photographer Richard Avedon, artists Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly, actors Robert Redford and Lena Dunham, documentarian Ken Burns and writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote and Joyce Carol Oates.
