Teacher at meditation center arrested in child sex assault case

BOULDER – Police in Colorado have arrested a teacher from a Buddhist meditation center for alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl.

The Boulder Police Department said Friday that 71-year-old William Llyod Karelis had been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of a child by a person in a position of trust.

It is not clear if Karelis has an attorney to comment on the arrest.

Police say Karelis was a teacher and leader during meditation retreats at the Boulder Shambhala Center and sexually assaulted the girl multiple times since 2000, when she was 13.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports that police believe other children may have been assaulted and are asking anyone with information to contact them.
