Saturday was a big day for local teams, featuring lots of big-league games as teams fight to get into the postseason.
The 3A/2A Intermountain league-leading Bayfield Wolverines hosted a doubleheader with Centauri on its diamond.
The Wolverines came out strong and won both contests handily, 13-3 and 9-1, to stay undefeated in the league. Bayfield is now 16-4 overall and 6-0 in the IML. Centauri slipped to 10-9, 1-5.
The Fort Lewis College softball team split its first two game with Regis University of Friday to tighten its grip on sixth place in the Rocky Mountain Conference standings. Regis, the No. 3 team in the league, won the first game, 2-0, but FLC came back and scored a 4-2 win in Game 2.
Both games were tight again on Saturday between the teams, but Regis managed to win them both, 12-7 and 3-1.
The Durango High School girls lacrosse team hosted its third league game in three days on Saturday. After taking down Montrose and Grand Junction the first two nights, however, Fruita Monument snapped the Demons’ winning streak on Saturday, 13-10. The Wildcats took an early 4-0 lead, but Anabel Carithers got DHS on the board with 10 minutes left in the half. About 30 seconds later, Emmylou Willis scored another goal to get DHS back in it.
The teams traded goals after that, and Fruita took a 8-5 lead into halftime. The Wildcats, however, scored the first two goals of the second half and held on for the win.
The Bayfield girls soccer team traveled up to the Front Range for a pair of games. On Friday, BHS took on Loveland Classical, but fell 5-2.
The Wolverines were scheduled to play Windsor Charter Academy on Saturday, but that score was unavailable at press time.
The Ignacio girls soccer team took on Montezuma-Cortez on Friday, but lost 6-1 to the Panthers. IHS was also scheduled to play Pagosa Springs on Saturday.
The Ignacio boys baseball team traveled to Trinidad for a doubleheader, but the Miners took Game 1, 4-1. Results from Game 2 were unavailable at press time.
