Teenager accused of sexual assault on 6-year-old

A 14-year-old was arrested Friday on charges of sexual assault on a child. The victim was a 6-year-old.

Police responded to a report of unlawful sexual contact of a minor at 9:21 p.m. Thursday on Arroyo Drive, according to a news release issued Monday by the Durango Police Department.

The incident occurred about 2½ hours earlier when the 14-year-old juvenile lured the victim from the company of two other children, the release said.

“The accused then led the victim into a wooded area near the apartments (on Arroyo), where the victim was sexually assaulted,” the release said.

Police said the victim did not suffer any serious physical injuries in the assault.

The juvenile was arrested Friday and placed into custody at the Robert E. DeNier Youth Services Center, where the suspect remained as of Monday afternoon.

The police recommended additional charges of enticement of a child and unlawful sexual contact to the District Attorney’s Office. All charges are Class 4 felonies.

The accused juvenile does not have any family relationship to the victim, said Detective Burke Baldwin, who is investigating the case.

“Detectives are investigating the possibility of at least one additional juvenile victim related to this case,” the news release said.

The Durango Police Department is asking anyone with information related to this crime, or any other incident related to this suspect, to call Baldwin at 375-4734.
