Temperatures unseasonably warm for Durango

Showers expected to move into region on Monday
The National Weather Service is calling for a mix of snow and rain for the San Juan Mountains after midnight tonight.

Temperatures in Durango have been unseasonably warm over the past few weeks.

Jim Pringle, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, said high temperatures for the first three days in November were in the low 60s.

“Normal high temperatures for this time of the year in Durango are the low 50s, and you have been getting significantly warmer than that,” he said.

The National Weather Service is calling for a mix of snow and rain for the San Juan Mountains after midnight tonight.

Pringle said it is unlikely snow will stick to the roads because of the warm temperatures.

“The top of Red Mountain Pass might have some slush, but that’s about it,” he said.

Pringle said temperatures are expected to reach the upper-50s through Monday with overnight lows in the low 30s.

He said things should cool down when showers move into the region Monday evening.

“We have a big upper trough across the West,” Pringle said. “Most of that energy will be North of us, but there is moisture moving across Colorado which is why you have some clouds. As that trough pushes cooler air down early in the week, the chance of showers become more likely as we move into Monday night and Tuesday.”

A trough is an extended region of relatively low atmospheric pressure, often associated with fronts.

Temperatures are expected to warm up by the middle of next week with highs in the upper-50s and low 60s.
