‘Temporary art’ a winner

Fresh off his gold medal at the Breckenridge International Snow Sculpting Championships, Durangoan Keith Martin has done it again.

His Team Breckenridge won a gold medal at the Colorado championship Loveland Snow Sculpture in the Dark competition in mid-February with a sculpture of splitting heads.

And last week in Canada, his Team Colorado placed second out of 10 teams in the Whitehorse International Snow Sculpting Challenge in the Yukon Territory with a cat gazing into a mirror, where it sees itself as a lion.

They were beaten by Team Alaska, a frequent competitor.

All snow sculptures beautify the world for only a week or two, but Martin’s sculpture may have come to an even sadder end.

Two male juveniles were arrested Sunday by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for vandalizing eight of the sculptures.

“Hence the term ‘temporary art,’” Martin said.
