Territories first to lead women’s suffrage

The editorial “Voter Access” (Herald, Sept. 4) stated that Colorado was the first state to give women the right to vote.

A simple Google search shows Wyoming was first in 1869, followed by Utah in 1870 and Washington in 1883. Granted, they were territories. But they were first, not Colorado. Where’s your fact checker?

Eds: Reader Cartwright’s distinction is correct. The other territories were first, however, Colorado was the first state to pass women’s suffrage into law via state referendum. Perhaps our error is also in using Yahoo.
