Statistically speaking, a day-and-night, give-and-take, yin-and-yang introduction to college volleyball came, fittingly, to a so-so end this fall for Bayfield High graduate Katy Funkhouser down in the Texas Panhandle.
The 5'8" freshman outside hitter managed to achieve a .004 hitting percentage on 69 kills (against 68 errors) in 242 attacks-in what was ultimately an uphill grind for Clarendon College. Clarendon brought up the Western Junior College Athletic Conference's rear in the overall [8-26] and conference [1-9] standings.
Seeing action in 25 of the Bulldogs' 34 matches and 71 of their 125 games, Funkhouser also recorded nine digs defensively, to go with 10 solo and 13 assisted blocks for a total of 23. Her solo-stuff count tied her for fourth-most on the team, while her kills count was good for seventh.
She twice achieved six kills in a match-versus Vernon College on Oct. 11 and on the Oct. 25 at home against New Mexico Military Institute. She also downed five in a match on six occasions, including her debut on Aug. 22 versus Seward County Community College of Kansas. Overall she ranked 36th in the six-team conference in kills, and 32nd in kills per game.
Odessa College of West Texas topped the tables during the regular season, but was denied a first-ever berth in the NJCAA Division I National Championships by the New Mexico Military Institute in the Region V Tournament's finale.
