On March 16th, the Durango Botanical Society, in conjunction with the La Plata County Extension Office, held a spring workshop, Tips for Trees. The speakers were Darrin Parmenter, La Plata County Extension director; Lisa Bourey, landscape designer and owner of Passion Flower Farms; and David Temple, a board-certified master arborist and owner of Trees of Trail Canyon.
Darrin discussed diseases and insects, advising homeowners to first recognize the insect or disease before taking action, or in other words, follow the physician’s creed of: “First do no harm.” Lisa counseled patience. It may take a tree or plant three to five years to become established. However, you must do your homework. Ask “Where is this tree going in my yard?” and “What do I want from it in terms of shade, privacy, flowering, etc.?” David began by stating “pruning is necessary, but pruning is both a science and an art!” He finished the day with an outdoor demonstration of where and how to prune and the anticipated results.
It was a great day and very informative.
