Durango Friends of the Arts’ first Prospecting for the Arts – A Twilight Affair on Sept. 28 was a stupendous success, surpassing all expectations. The Disabled American Veterans Chapter 48 of Durango runs a van to the VA Hospital in Albuquerque three days a week to take disabled veterans to their medical appointments. In order to maintain this challenging schedule, we need a lot of drivers. We occasionally need to advertise for new drivers, so around the “Patriotic” holidays like Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day, we ask the Herald to run our ad for us.
Invariably, Odette Zenio at the want ads desk is happy to help and runs our ad for a few days. We usually receive 20 or so calls from prospective volunteers and end up with three or four new drivers, and it really helps out.
We would like to thank the Herald and especially Odette for her able assistance. It is greatly appreciated by the entire DAV organization as well as the many disabled veterans who ride the van. So, if you’d like to volunteer to drive, please give me a call at 259-2678.

Recently, as I was stepping off of a curb near the library, I somehow flipped into the air and landed on the pavement, primarily injuring my eyebrow area in the process. I was stunned, and also most fortunate that local veterinarian Rick Bayer had witnessed my fall and immediately came to my assistance. He quickly helped me get up, had me hold my jacket to staunch the bleeding on my face, and then helped me to my car and drove me to Durango Urgent Care on Main, where I was soon professionally treated and bandaged. Words are insufficient to properly share my gratitude to Dr. Bayer for his kindness.

Thank you to all 105 of you who worked tirelessly over four days on our recent book sale. This thank you includes those who worked the day before the sale hauling donated books from storage, setting up the sale itself, and unboxing over 350 cartons of books. Thanks to all the cheerful volunteers who worked during the two-day sale as cashiers and genre table organizers making shopping easy for all those filling up their $10 book bags. Boxers and book hauler volunteers worked the day after the sale transporting remaining books back to storage. It truly “takes a village” to make a Friends of the Library book sale happen.
Huge thank yous to the six-member volunteer Book Sale Team who worked a total of 177 hours throughout those four days answering questions, sorting books, helping daily volunteers, identifying and fixing potential problem areas, and making sure the sale worked as a fine-tuned machine. As part of the Friends’ mission, over 400 pounds of books were donated after the sale to teachers and the Senior Center.
The entire book-loving Durango community also deserves our thanks for your ongoing support of the Friends book sales. Your donations make these sales and the Friends’ Book Store possible. Your shopping dollars go straight to the library and its branches, providing programs for all ages, supplementing specific needs beyond budget, and sponsoring special events such as the annual Literary Festival and the popular bookmark contest.
