Thank you to “Cover Night” musicians

Thank you to the wonderful musicians who make up our local and regional music community. Recently, KDUR Radio at Fort Lewis College hosted another “Cover Night,” an annual fundraiser where musicians come together to play the music of one particular artist or band. KDUR has hosted 24 of these events, covering everyone from Madonna to Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin to The Clash. The most recent featured the music of Black Sabbath; 45 musicians in 11 bands took to the Animas City Theatre stage to celebrate a legendary band as well as raise some money for KDUR.

The musicians didn’t get paid, nor did their appearance in the lineup result in a record contract. They did it because they love music and they love a radio station that supports local musicians.

More than a fundraiser, KDUR Cover Nights prove this area has a music community brimming with talent, and those musicians, whether from a country-rock or metal band, are willing to come together and play for a great cause. Anyone who has ever said this area has a lame music scene (a foolish statement I’ve heard more than once), obviously hasn’t been to a KDUR Cover Night.

On behalf of the staff, students and volunteer DJs at KDUR, I’d like to say thanks to the Animas City Theatre staff, Music Masters, Jimmy’s Music, Scott “Scooter” Smith, Pat Dressen, Dan Leek and Erik Nordstrom, the people who bought tickets to the most recent or any KDUR Cover Night and, most importantly, the musicians who donate their time and talent to such a great community concert. Durango’s and the Four-Corners music scene is, in fact, quite awesome.
