I just finished my first time riding in the Citizen Tour of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic. What a blast! Durango to Silverton – 49 miles of breathtaking scenery over two mountain passes and 6,000 feet of vertical climbing.
A lot of training in advance paid big returns in enjoyment of the day. Hats off to all the organizers of the event, which appeared to go flawlessly.
Thank you to all the participants riding. It was inspiring to see first hand their efforts, including the pros. Although strangers, we often commiserated and exchanged words of exuberant support.
Thank you to all residents and travelers who were inconvenienced by the six-hour road closure. Thank you to law enforcement, road crews and emergency responders who provided the feel of a safety net, if needed.
And special, special thanks to the volunteers at the aid stations and cheering spectators who helped me to dig deep and tap into those inner reserves of strength I didn’t know I had.
It was a valuable experience that I will carry forward both on and off the bike.
