Thanksgiving DUI enforcement stops 518 impaired drivers

Holiday enforcement began Dec. 2
Law enforcement agencies ramp up efforts to catch impaired drivers during the Heat is On campaign, which is conducted 12 times a year. During the Thanksgiving enforcement period, 90 agencies arrested 518 people for DUI.

State and local law enforcement agencies issued a cumulative 518 DUI tickets in an effort to crack down on impaired drivers around the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Heat is On campaign involved Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Transportation and local law enforcement agencies during the 10-day period from Nov. 18 to Nov. 28.

Aurora Police cited 69 people, CSP cited 64 and Denver Police cited 57 – the three highest arrest totals.

Colorado law enforcement began another heightened patrols on Dec. 2, which will continue through Dec. 12 – the “holiday party DUI” enforcement period. Last year, 596 drivers were arrested during this enforcement period by 100 agencies.

Preliminary data indicate 177 people have died in alcohol- and drug-related crashes in Colorado in 2016 to date.

“Traffic fatalities in Colorado have already surpassed last year’s total,” Darrell Lingk, director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT, said in a news release. “Impaired drivers were involved in about one-third of those deaths, and CDOT is determined to continue DUI-prevention efforts, as enforcement is our most effective tool to reduce impaired driving crashes and fatalities.”

First-time DUI offenders can receive up to one year in jail, a suspended license and fines.

Law enforcement agencies increase their watch for DUIs 12 times a year when drunken driving is more prevelant, specifically around holidays. Enforcement periods can include sobriety checkpoints, saturation patrols and additional officers on duty.
