First there was the 8.5 million-pound boulder that moseyed down to a spot alongside Highway 145, between Cortez and Telluride, over Memorial Day weekend. Then, last week, Gov. Jared Polis announced the state will keep the rock where it is. “We expect that for generations to come, people will have the opportunity to observe this geological masterpiece that we’re calling Memorial Rock,” Polis said.
Not so fast. Polis may get to keep the rock and save a little money, but naming rights are something else. “Memorial Rock? Meh,” said the Denver Post. It decided to poll some other choices, including, of course, Rocky McRocker Face.
Let’s see: Something that makes a huge, destructive appearance in Southwest Colorado and then we work around it... We shall call it... Mount Climate Change.
