The Herald recently published an article regarding Capt. Bob Stratton (Herald, Aug. 1). I am originally from Durango and was hired by Chief John Garnand. I wasn’t really sure that I wanted to work in law enforcement, but Chief Garnand said that if I didn’t like the job in two weeks he would understand.
At that point he introduced me to Capt. Bob (Robert) Stratton. I was very scared and unsure of what I was getting into. Capt. Stratton looked at me and at this point I went “oh boy” because he was a big man and really big with all the clout of being the captain of the Durango Police Department.
He ushered me into his office and began talking to me about the what I was getting into. By the time he finished my head was swimming with all kinds of visions, but I liked what he had to say.
The next thing I knew he was measuring me for my uniform. I was actually proud and had an amazing feeling because of the “Captain.” Yes, it was an adjustment, but after the second day as a police officer in the DPD, I knew that it was the best decision I have ever made, to this day.
I do contribute that to Captain Stratton and the rest of the department. We were an awesome team. Thank you Michael, he was proud of you.
