The citizens are letting the county down

A letter to the editor accuses our elected county commission and employees of the county of hoodwinks and high jinks with regard to property tax assessments (“

The citizens of La Plata County are if anything under-taxed with regard to property taxes, and I, for one, would gladly pay more to provide for educating our children, libraries, caring for our seniors and improving roads, as well as fire and police protection.

As a fairly recent transplant who has owned numerous homes in numerous states, I am perplexed and highly critical of those who believe that local government services we agree we need should be paid largely by tourists, oil and gas companies, or any other third party. That is truly living in a condition of a welfare state.

It is our responsibility as citizens to pay it forward to the next generation. As a working citizen and homeowner in La Plata County, who by the way has no children at home, I am happy to pay more to provide excellent essential services that meet the needs of our community. From what I have reviewed about the county government, these folks are doing an admirable job while we as citizen taxpayers are not measuring up to our collective responsibilities. It’s time to step it up!
