The Code Rights Project is nonpartisan

In response to Mr. Skillen's letter (Herald, Oct. 5) regarding The Code Rights Project, there are a few important points to clarify.

The Code Rights Project has taken no position on the proposed 1-cent sales tax, elections, or on any other political issue. Our work is not about advocating for or against tax measures, nor about “gutting” the county’s land-use system. Rather, our purpose is to identify facts, gather experiences from residents and businesses, and determine whether there are improvements that can be made in La Plata County’s planning, building, and legal processes.

If reforms are warranted, they will be based on evidence and presented transparently. If, on the other hand, the current system is working effectively, that will be reflected in our findings as well. The goal is not to serve any narrow interest, but to strengthen public understanding and ensure fair, efficient systems for everyone in our community.

Reports, methodology, and source documents received through Colorado Open Records requests were sent to La Plata County Commissioners 10 days in advance of public release and are posted on our website: CodeRights.org.
