The Durango Arts Center presents a one-night only production of The Guys, starring TV and Broadway actors Wendie Malick and Dan Lauria, at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College on Saturday.
This event is a fundraiser for the arts center and local first responders in the Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Flight for Life, Durango Fire Protection District, Durango Police Department, La Plata County Search & Rescue and the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.
The center is excited to bring the heart-rendering production of The Guys to Durango in honor of the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The play revolves around two characters: a New York City Fire Department captain, played by Lauria, who lost eight men in the collapse of the World Trade Center towers, and an editor, played by Malick, who helps him write the eulogies he must deliver at the memorial service.
Malick and Lauria have performed The Guys numerous times together in theaters across the country, and they are thrilled to be reunited in this production in honor of the first responders and in support of the area community.
The Guys "is truly a celebration of these firefighter's lives, rather than just mourning their losses," Malick said in a press release. "Our greatest goal here is to support the local first responders, as they are so crucially important to us now."
The play debuted off-Broadway at The Flea Theater on December 4, 2001; exactly 12 weeks to the day of the World Trade Center attacks. It was directed by Jim Simpson and starred Sigourney Weaver and Bill Murray.
Malick is played Nina Van Horn on the NBC hit "Just Shoot Me." She has also starred in HBO's "Dream On," "Frasier" and "Hot In Cleveland."
Lauria is best known as the Dad on the Emmy winning TV show "The Wonder Years." However, his true passion is the theater, having been a part of over 60 Equity productions.
Tickets are $35 and $20 for Students. Prior to the performance on Saturday, NFP will host a premier Backstage Reception at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Powerhouse Science Center. Tickets are $150 and include the Saturday performance. Music by Hello Dollface and catering are included.
Local sponsors have paid for 12 tickets for local first responders to attend the Backstage Reception on Sept. 9, and approximately 250 tickets to attend the performance on Saturday.
Tickets for both events are available for purchase online at DurangoConcerts.TIX.com , by phone at 247-7657, or inside The Welcome Center located at 802 Main Ave. in downtown Durango.
