To Herald readers,
Every four years, The Durango Herald has enjoyed hosting an open house on election night. Red, white and blue bunting, large-screen televisions, and hors d’oeuvres and beverages. The crowd – and it has always been a crowd – gathers between about 7:30 and 10 p.m. Candidates and their supporters are part of the group.
This year, there will be no open house Tuesday. The crowd would far exceed the governor’s current maximum of two families and 10 people, and more importantly, even if the governor had not been that specific, it would not be an example of good judgment. It would have been an easy setting for the virus.
The Herald’s website will be active, with reporters and editors posting results and commentary as they come in until midnight. Local and statewide races have a good chance of being called by then.
For print subscribers, the Herald’s first section’s print pages’ deadline has been extended an hour by The Daily Times’ pressroom in Farmington. That will put some more timely results and related content on subscribers’ driveways early Wednesday morning.
Back to the website, where every day, subscriber usage is climbing: The newsroom will be posting stories beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
In November 2024, we expect the front doors will be open again. We look forward to seeing you in person.
