Ever heard of kombucha?
Me neither, until I saw it in all three of the area’s natural food stores and found out it’s one of the hottest selling cold drinks on the market. Sort of hard to classify, kombucha is a fungus that is fermented in tea water and, often, sugar and flavored with various juices.
It ranked second at all three local stores, Nature’s Oasis, Natural Grocers and Durango Natural Foods Cooperative, for most popular cold beverage (excluding that ultimate favorite, of course, good old beer).
What’s the No. 1 go-to drink for thirsty shoppers this spring? Coconut water, again at all three shops.
“I sell more coconut water than anything else,” said grocery manager Charlie Mason at Natural Grocers. “I restock two, three times a day.”
Flavored teas, especially the Yerba Mate brand, rank third.
Give up soda – try something new. Chia juice anyone?
