AUGUSTA, Ga. – A brief look at the third round of the Masters on Saturday:
LEADING: Jordan Spieth (73) at 3-under 213.
TRAILING: Smylie Kaufman had the low score of the day with a 69 and is one shot behind.
CHASING: Bernhard Langer (70) and Hideki Matsuyama (72) were two shots behind.
AT STAKE FOR SPIETH: Spieth extended his Masters record by leading for the seventh consecutive round. A victory would allow him to join Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners at Augusta National.
ONE FOR THE AGES: Langer at 58 would be the oldest major champion by 10 years. Julius Boros was 48 when he won the 1968 PGA Championship.
MAD SCRAMBLE: Among the 11 players within five shots of the lead were Jason Day and Dustin Johnson (three behind) and Rory McIlroy (five behind).
SHOT(S) OF THE DAY: Day made a 70-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole. When the cheers subsided, Langer chipped in from 40 feet for birdie.
KEY STATISTIC: The scoring average of 75.72 was the highest for the third round at the Masters since 2007, when it was 77.35.
NOTEWORTHY: No one from the final seven groups Saturday broke par.
