The Medal of Honor is awarded, not won

While I appreciate Ann Butler’s attempt to honor those who have served with honor and valor above and beyond the call of duty. I was a bit disturbed by her representation of the Medal of Honor.

This medal is awarded to those exceptional individuals who have inspired and helped those of us who served. It is not a medal for coming in first in some competition. To know that there are those among us who will go to the extreme to protect their fellow warriors is reassuring in the heat of battle. I feel that the medal is as much for all who serve as the individual who is honored. We need these people for comfort and inspiration.

Perhaps a bit more sensitivity and research would help. This medal is not won. It is awarded to those who go above and beyond by risking more than most for those who serve with them.
