The Second Amendment provides that the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. A lot of people have guns and feel more secure knowing that they can defend themselves. In February, we had Parkland, the latest in a string of horrors.
The Second Amendment recites its purpose: “a well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State.” Facilitating massacres is not something the drafters of the Bill of Rights had in mind. The Supreme Court has banned certain gun control restrictions. It has also made clear that the Second Amendment doesn’t preclude common-sense gun safety laws any more than the First Amendment precludes banning yelling “Fire!” in a crowded theater.
Unaware of or unconcerned with this is Congressman Scott Tipton, who has been financed by the NRA and earned their “A” rating for following their instructions. Tipton should be voted out of office. He should be replaced by Diane Mitsch Bush, who is running for the Democratic nomination to oppose him.
Diane voted for background checks and limiting magazine capacities while serving in the Colorado state legislature. She supports universal background checks nationwide. For this, the NRA awarded her an “F.”
The NRA claims that sensible gun safety laws ignore the Second Amendment. In fact, it’s the NRA that ignores the Second Amendment — by tirelessly working to expand it beyond its constitutional bounds.
