The season to thank locals on 416 Fire

As my wife Ellen and I reflect on 2018, we are so thankful for those in this community who – day in and day out – place others before themselves.

They are the professionals (career and volunteer) who every day are making a difference in people’s lives; and most of the time, without notice or appreciation.

It is these men and women that made a decisive difference during the first two days of the long battle in the 416 Fire. The initial coordinated and heroic attack on June 1-2 protected property, homes and residents on the west side of Highway 550 – near the fire origination– plus they kept the wildfire from gaining any ground on the east side.

After two hard fought days, this local effort saved hundreds of homes and properties from possible destruction prior to the 416 management by the Rocky Mountain Type II Blue Team.

We owe immense gratitude to the men and women from Durango Fire, San Juan National Forest Service, Upper Pine River Fire, Los Pinos Fire, Durango Tanker Base, the pilots and ground crews for the fire suppression aircraft, the La Plata County Sheriff, La Plata County Office of Emergency Management, Colorado State Patrol and the Durango Police Department, and any and all others involved in the 416 Fire.

May you all have a wonderful holiday season with your family and friends. We thank you once again for who you are, what you do and your unfailing love and dedication to our community.
