This letter is to my fellow La Plata County citizens. There are expectations attached to the public service of our elected officials – also laws – that apply to commissioners’ conduct and ethics as well as their performance. There are also consequences attached for failures.
If we broke the law, we would justly suffer the consequence. If we failed in our job performance or cheated, we would be fired as a consequence.
It can be no less for our elected officials!
Consequences of unacceptable performance are precisely the reason for the Recall Lachelt movement. Gwen Lachelt has fully demonstrated her contempt and disdain for the citizens she pretends to represent.
Truth is, she represents herself only. She has stuck her finger in the eye of the people with one hand, and with the other hand, she grabs the money paid to her by our hardworking citizens.
We know the vulgar names you have called us, Ms Lachelt, the ridicule you have sent in our direction, and your underhanded methods to cover your tracks.
It is time now for your consequence and ultimate termination from your job as county commissioner.
The time for demanding accountability from elected officials is long overdue. Our responsibility to is step up, participate and act now.

Editor’s note: The deadline to sign the petition was May 2. The county clerk and recorder is currently verifying the additional signatures turned in to see if there are enough valid ones to continue the recall process.
