The times in our town are a-changing

In today’s Herald it says that a cool, single-story 1950s building, that used to be Kangaroo Express – and that could of been a great retro burger and taco drive-in – will be torn down for more high-rise.

The developer in charge has made a boat-load of money on so many lots by building condos around town, I wish he would do a project where money was not the primary motive.

Across from Gazpacho’s, the mega 200-room hotel on an acre and a third is back on the drawing board. With that empty lot, the Southern Ute Tribe could have built a Native American Cultural center representing the entire USA, as I suggested to them when it was for sale. Locals and tourists need more novel sites in town to be proud of.

“Oh well, oh hell,” just another annoying multi-storied hotel regarded as an “ant farm” by residents living next door.

With all the building restrictions required on East Third Avenue, other places in town should have the same preservation considerations. Wish the empire-builders here would take the time to preserve the integrity of what is left of this unique town.

At least the recent rebuild of the 1950s building on 11th and Main, Earnie’s, is cool. We just need more cool.
