The Weekender

Some top picks for what to do this Weekend in and around Durango.

Class is in session with The Faculty X

So you ate like you have a hole in your neck on Thanksgiving Day and your waistband is feeling a little snug – if you can even get into your pants. Shake off some of those holiday calories by shaking what the good lord gave you with The Faculty X on Friday night at the balcony Backstage, 600 Main Ave.

From Pagosa Springs, The Faculty X will be hitting you up with their brand of progressive jazz/rock/jam. Members are Glen Goss on vocals, Rick Riojas on bass, Jason Dockter on drums and Paul Blackman on guitar.

The show will start at 10 p.m., which gives you plenty of time to peel yourself off the couch and head downtown.

Trunk show at DAC

If the start of the gift-giving season has you a little frazzled and feeling tight in the chest, check out the Tuareg Jewelry Trunk Show, featuring the works of Moussa Albaka, in the Plein Gallery gift shop at the Durango Arts Center.

The traditional Tuareg jewelry design is passed down from generations of men living in the deserts of Niger.

Albaka is no slouch in the art department – he has collaborated with well-known designers and has even been exhibited in the Smithsonian Museum.

At the trunk show, you’ll find necklaces, bracelets, earrings, amulets, daggers and locks, all made of silver.

Check out the show from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and get yourself a little something nice, huh?

Juried art show at Southern Ute Museum

If you find yourself heading toward Ignacio, be sure to stop in the Southern Ute Museum for its juried art show, running from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. through Jan. 16.

The show is an opportunity for artists from all over the Four Corners to show off what they do best.

The winners of the show are: best in show: Allen Woody, Durango, for his piece, “Spirit Talker”; first place: Marikay Shellam, Ignacio, “In The Folds Of My Mind”; second place: Miki Harder, Durango, “For you”; third place: Thomas Chippewa, Durango, “Canon Blessing”; and honorable mention: Angeling Cruz Yen, “In Pursuit of Happiness.”
