The Weekender

Some top picks of things to do this weekend in Durango

A fusion of hooks and yuks

Barenaked Ladies, a Canadian rock band that rose to prominence in the ’90s with hits like “One Week” and “If I had $1,000,000,” is swinging through Southwest Colorado this weekend for a show at Sky Ute Casino, 14324 Colorado Highway 172, Ignacio. The concert is at 8 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $55 VIP, $45 reserved and $34 general admission, www.skyutecasino.com. Known for clever lyrics, witty rap-rock and onstage banter, the band is celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2014 with the release of its 12th album, “Grinning Streak,” and a tour that includes gigs at vaunted venues like Red Rocks and LA’s Greek Theatre.

A musical tour through the movies

The slinky jazz line of “Pink Panther.” The galloping, booming title track of “Star Wars.” And the ominous, terrifying music of “Jaws.” It’s all on tap tonight at Music in the Mountains’ “Hooray for Hollywood!” program. Guest conductor Richard Kaufman, who has spent much of his life conducting music for film and television, his daughter, vocalist Whitney Claire Kaufman, and the Festival Orchestra will take the audience on a musical tour of Hollywood that includes songs from iconic films like “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Mary Poppins” and “Pinocchio.” The musical salute to the silver screen takes place at 7 p.m. today at the Festival Tent, Durango Mountain Resort, 1 Skier Place. Tickets are $54/$44/$20 and are available at www.musicinthemountains.com.

Country-soul meets swamp-funk

After more than 15 years singing for popular Austin alt-grass band The Gourds, Kevin Russell branched out with a solo project a couple years ago. Shinyribs is a rich Americana mix of country-soul, swamp funk and salt-of-the-earth storytelling – all tied together with Russell’s distinct and expressive vocals. Russell said the project has provided him with a jolt of inspiration and renewed excitement. “It’s been a great creative independence for me,” he said. “It’s a pretty amazing band.” There aren’t as many mandolins and fiddles as his former group, Russell said, but the sky-high energy level the band was known for carries over in this new project, which features Winfield Cheek on keys, Keith Langford on drums, Jeff Brown on bass and the Tijuana Train Wreck horn section. “It might even be higher energy,” Russell said. “You’ll have a blast.” Shinyribs will play the Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive, at 8:30 p.m. Monday. Tickets for the Durango Massive Production show are $12 and are available at www.animascitytheatre.com.

More minion madness

Summer just isn’t summer without a movie under the stars. Lucky for you, Three Springs Plaza continues its summer outdoor movie series today with a free screening of “Despicable Me 2” at the plaza, 175 Mercado St. Seating is first come, first served, and people are invited to bring blankets, chairs and picnics. A small concession stand will offer popcorn, candy and soda. The movie starts at dusk.
