The Weekender

Some top picks for what to do this weekend in and around Durango.

Overfield all around

When you hear decent, quality, listenable music, you might nod your head along with the tune, smile pleasantly, tap your toe. But when you find your head not going up and down but side to side and your face twisting up as if you’re in pain, and your shoulders and torso undulating with the groove, you know you have something seriously nasty on your hands. And when Durango bluesman Robby Overfield is on stage, you might find yourself doing plenty of the latter.

Overfield won’t be hard to find in Durango this weekend. He’ll bring his soulful blues to Derailed Pour House at 8 p.m. Friday, to the Autumn Arts Festival at noon Saturday on 2nd Ave. between 6th and 9th Streets downtown, and closes out the weekend at 7 p.m. Sunday at The Office Spiritorium.

With his soulful, expressive voice to match his guitar licks, Overfield has a knack for bluesy, Americana storytelling and an ability to funk and jam out both fast and slow. And whether you’re up for dancing or just listening, there will be opportunity for both.

Music professor potpourri

They call it a collage for a reason. The Fort Lewis College music department kicks off its recital season showcasing its faculty with a variety of diverse works, whether it’s Jeff Solon on harmonica, John O’Neal on marimba or the world premier performance of pianist Lisa Campi Walters’ clarinet/piano duet, “The Ability to Swim.”

It’s also a chance for the community to meet and hear the FLC music faculty, including its newest member, Dr. Kerry Ginger, visiting professor of voice and theory. The mezzo soprano comes from Arizona, where she earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Voice at Arizona State University and performed with the Phoenix Opera, The Phoenix Symphony and Arizona Opera.

The Faculty Collage begins at 3 p.m. Sunday at Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall on the Fort Lewis campus. Ticket are $15 for adults, $5 for children and free for FLC students with ID. All proceeds go to music scholarships. Go to www.fortlewis.edu/music/UpcomingConcertsRecitals for more information.

St. Marks cues up 11th season

The St. Mark’s Recital Series kicks off its 11th season at 7 p.m. Friday at St. Mark’s Epicopal Church with the Vivace Piano Duo of Linda Mack Berven and C. Scott Hagler.

The duo will perform four-hand works by Fauré, Clementi, Handel, and a set of Brahms’ “Hungarian Dances.”

Tickets for the recital are $20 for adults and $5 for children and students.

The event is part of Hagler’s organization, 3rd Ave. Arts, which continues its programs the weekend of Sept. 25-27 with the Sacred Arts Festival. The multifaith festival “celebrates artistic expressions of the sacred, and includes art, music and poetry, as well as a labyrinth and meditation garden, lectures, demonstrations, classes and a roundtable discussion,” according to its website.
