Regional beer, tunes to flow in Mancos

Does the world need yet another beer festival? Clearly, the answer is “yes, please.” This time, it’s the Mancos Valley Summer BrewFest doing the honors.

The inaugral event, from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Cottonwood Park in Mancos, will feature beer from eight regional breweries and live music from Sweetwater Station, Afrobeatniks, Last Nickel and Diabolical Sound Platoon.

Tickets (good for admission only) are $20 at the gate and $15 in advance (through Friday) and are available in Mancos at Mancos Brewing Co., Zuma Natural Foods and The Beacon, in Cortez at Kokopelli Bike & Board, The Pie Maker Bakery and The Beacon, in Dolores at Dolores Food Market and in Durango at Southwest Sound. Proceeds benefit Mancos Valley Resources and The Mancos River Trail.

Inside the festival, beer tickets are six for $10. One ticket will get you a 5-ounce sample; three tickets will get you a pint. The participating breweries are Dolores River Brewery, Animas Brewing Co., Ska Brewing Co., Carver Brewing Co., Moab Brewery, Main Street Brewery, Brew Pub & Kitchen and Mancos Brewing Co.

B-There: Beer, brats, bluegrass

Prediction: You’ll come for the beer and brats but it’ll be the bluegrass you’ll still be humming the next morning, thanks to Durango Nature Studies’ annual “Bluegrass Festival: A Summer Celebration,” from 5:30 p.m to 9 p.m. Friday at Rotary Park.

The all Durango-based musical acts for this year’s festival are:

Maple Range, the classical/folk/bluegrass duo of Alissa Wolf (also of The Cannondolls) and Rusty Charpentier (also of Running Out of Road, which is on the bill as well).

PG Trio, which mixes bluegrass, country, blues and progressive fusion and is made up of Pete Giuliani on guitar and vocals, Ross Douglas on mandolin and Richard Leavitt on guitar.

Running Out of Road, the smokin’-hot five-piece band fresh off its third-place finish in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival’s bluegrass contest.

Tickets for the festival are $7 in advance at Maria’s Bookshop or $10 at the gate. Kids 6 and under are free. Beer, root beer and brats will be available for purchase.

Hot doc in Durango

It’s the highest-grossing documentary in years in the U.S. and the third-highest grossing documentary of all time in the United Kingdom. It has a 97 percent rating on RottenTomatoes. It’s a documentary that is hot, hot, hot – and it’s showing in Durango.

“Amy” examines the life of Amy Winehouse, who, despite dying at age 27 from alcohol poisoning after producing just two albums, is one of the biggest music icons in British history. Although music made her a star, her chaotic personal life stole headlines.

Directed by Asif Kapadia and rated “R,” “Amy” is playing until at least Aug. 20 at Animas City Theatre. Tickets are $9 for general admission and $8 for students, seniors and military. For more information, go to animascitytheatre.com. You can view a trailer at https://youtu.be/Za3lZcrzzcM.
