Some top picks of what to do this weekend in Durango

Locals open their shutters

Gain a new perspective this weekend by seeing a few different exhibitions at Open Shutter Gallery.

We’re lucky to live in such a picturesque area of the world. And in today’s technological times, many people carry a camera in their pocket to capture it all, and some even take it a little further with their fancier equipment and tripods.

Open Shutter often brings in some of the world’s best photographers, including Steve McCurry of National Geographic, but once a year, the gallery features 40 residents from the area for an annual community show, “Day and Night.”

Jim Dratfield of New York City also will be hanging photos in the gallery for his “Dog Days” show, a perfect theme for a canine-loving town. He’ll be present. And last but not least, some Polaroids taken by local Jeff Madeen from 1977-1980 will be featured. “They are from his life and times during that era when he was running around with his artist crew in Chicago,” said Arista Slater-Sandoval, gallery manager and creative director at Open Shutter. A reception – and chance to meet the photographers – will begin at 6 p.m. Friday.

Tappin’ the firkin

Firkin? What’s that? It’s a volume of beer, 40 liters to be exact. And Steamworks Brewing Co. will be holding its monthly Firkin Friday event this week, in which “Framboozin” is being tapped at 3 p.m. It’s being brewed with a framboise base – think white chocolate with raspberries, said Steamworks co-founder Kris Oyler. “It’s (Firkin Fridays) just kind of something fun and different,” he said.

Get there early, this one will go fast. Once a firkin is tapped, it’s not meant be kept around. It’s brewed to be consumed quickly. A 10-ounce glass costs $1.

Paper art

Welcome Tucson, Arizona-based artist Catherine Nash to the Durango Arts Center this weekend. She specializes in Japanese and Western hand papermaking, encaustic painting and mixed media. From 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, she’ll exhibit “Turning the Page: A retrospective of Artist Books.” Her books include two decades of creative work. Saturday and Sunday, she’ll be imparting her knowledge at DAC by teaching the class “Exploring the Surface: Mixed Media Drawing on Paper.” Students will learn how to combine a wide variety of wet and dry medias, waxes and gliding on a variety of papers. She’ll also show how to use external sizing to manipulate the absorbency of watercolor or inks. For more information, visit www.durangoarts.org.
