Some top picks for what to do this weekend in Durango

Writers for the stars

There are people in Nashville you’ve probably never heard of, and they might own the biggest, nicest houses. That’s because the money is in songwriting. And if you listen to country music, or maybe even if you don’t, chances are you’ve heard these three women’s songs through a surrogate.

Nashville Chicks with Hits will be in Durango on Saturday night at the Community Concert Hall to perform hit songs that they penned for others, as well as their own recordings.

Australian Sherrié Austin, who has written for Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton, got her start as a teenager opening for Johnny Cash and acted on the ’80s TV series “Facts of Life.”

Country Music Association award-winner Kylie Sackley, also originally from Australia, has written for LeAnn Rimes. Austin and Sackley will be joined by well-versed New Mexico-native Alissa Moreno. Moreno has been nominated for a Grammy Award and for CMT Video of the Year for “Every Day,” which she wrote for Rascal Flatts, but she’s not limited to country music. She also has written songs for pop artists Vertical Horizon and Colbie Caillat. For more information and tickets ($18-28), visit www.durangoconcerts.com or call 247-7657.

Mangold Duo – Bonnie Mangold and Marilyn Mangold Garst – will show their wide range of experience and skills on the cello (Bonnie) and piano (Marilyn) in the third presentation of the Fellowship’s 2014-2015 Recital Series. They’ll open the program with Sonata No. 6 in B-flat Major for cello and continuo by Antonio Vivaldi. They’ll also include the short, salon-music-style “Scherzo” by Claude Debussy, and the highlight of the program – a pair of classical yet romantic sonatas by Samuel Barber and Johannes Brahms, which were written early in the composers’ careers. Tickets are $15 for adults; $7 for children (age 7 and younger) and for students with ID. Buy tickets at the door with cash or check or in advance at http://bit.ly/1HHTrtm.

As part of the 21st annual Creativity Festivity, DAC also will exhibit the artwork of some of the local community’s most talented children, starting April 10. The opening reception is 5-7 p.m. Friday, and the exhibit will be up until May 2.
