Kids’ art for a cause
You could buy a piece by the next Pablo Picasso or Henri Matisse at Durango Early Learning Center’s Spring Art Show. The school will feature works from its 79 students from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge.
And, not only will you be patronizing the local childrens’ art scene, you also will be helping to send children in need to DELC for those ever-so-important preschool years.
The pieces, which include paintings, weavings and mixed media, will be sold for $30 apiece. Some paintings have been made into cards, which will be sold for $1.50 each or $5 for four. Entry is $10 for adults and $3 for kids, and all money raised will be used to assist low-income families with DELC tuition.
“We have phenomenal little artists here,” said Lesley Lach, DELC’s director. “This taps into their imagination, taps into their memories and develops different skills. All in all, it’s a very useful thing to do with children.”
Creativity Festivity
Studies have shown that arts education also can enhance proficiency in science and math, and, to top it off, it’s fun for children. Well, this is the weekend for Durango’s young artists to shine.
Since late March, four professional artists have been exhibiting their childlike art at Durango Arts Center, and this week Durango students in grades kindergarten through 12 will join them with the exhibit “Everyday Magic,” part of the 21st annual Creativity Festivity. An opening reception will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Creativity Festivity is a weekslong event that will include performances of the play “Xanadu, Jr.” by DAC Applause! at 7 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Saturday at DAC. Tickets are $8. The play also will be performed in local elementary schools.
Durango High School students will participate in a poetry slam April 22 at the DAC Theatre. Sign-ups are at 6:30 p.m. that day, and the show starts at 7 p.m. Also, high school artwork will be hanging at Steaming Bean Co. throughout the month of May.
Lawn Chair Kings to rock the Balcony
The Balcony Backstage will be hopping Saturday night when local favorites the Lawn Chair Kings take the stage.
The “Western garage” band from Durango has been rocking the Four Corners scene since 2000. They cover all their bases and pull their musical influences from a variety of genres such as country, rock, pop and punk.
The intimate Balcony Backstage is an ideal venue for LCK – revelers can dance with the band, and their drinks will be within arm’s reach.
LCK, which consists of Pat Dressen, Hap Purcell, Dan Leek and Erik Nordstrom, will start the show at 10 p.m. Friday. There is no cover charge.
