Open Shutter Gallery shutters competition

For those of you who may have just gotten into town or haven’t found your way downtown lately, there are only a couple more weeks to check out “Exposure,” Open Shutter Gallery’s annual international juried photography competition.

This year’s best in show honors went to Durango-based photojournalist Jeremy Wade Shockley for his photo “Eaves Ranch, New Mexico.” Best of color went to Per A. Hemholm for “Arches, Claremont, CA”; best of black and white was awarded to Carol Walker for “Classic Spanish Stallion” and the excellence award was presented to Ralph Hassenpflug for “Untitled.”

The photograph will hang in the gallery until Jan. 14.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

For more information, call 385-8355.

Who says there’s nothing funny about the holidays?

So maybe the festivities of the past few days have worn you down to a nub. And maybe – just maybe – if you hear “Feliz Navidad” one more time, you’re going away for murder 1.

Sound about right? If this is indeed the case, unclench your jaw, take a deep breath, get out of the house and head down to the Henry Strater Theatre for its December Comedy Night, featuring the comedic stylings of Spencer James and Jimmy Abeyta – neither exactly a slouch in the comedy business (James started performing when he was 17.).

Seems to me, their family stories and everyday observations will make even your family horror story pale in comparison.

The 18-and-older show will start at 8 Saturday night, with doors opening at 7:30. Tickets are $10 for advance general admission/12 bucks at the door. If you’re feeling fancy, you can also order up box seats. For those, call the box office at 375-7160.

Sit down and kick up your feet at the Office

Not in the mood for comedy? Sometimes, all a person needs to relax is a nice place to sit, perhaps an adult beverage and a little locally-grown love music, yeah? You may want to pop in to the Office Spiritorium for live music by longtime local musician Greg Ryder on Saturday night.

After leaving his family farm in the 1970s and settling in Durango, Ryder has been writing and recording songs – some autobiographical, some satirical, and none written for mass consumption.

Ryder will play from 7 to 11 p.m. There is no cover charge.
