A mom’s body
Photo Divine is holding its third annual Mother’s Day show, “Your Mama’s a SuperHERo,” in which 20 mothers posed nude for photos. Kyla Jenkinson and Wesley Sebern, owners of Photo Divine, are holding the event in honor of their mother, who passed away last November. “It’s a celebration of what moms do and how much transition our bodies go through to bring little people into this world,” Jenkinson said. The opening is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, 1150 Main Ave. Mother’s Day is May 10.
Open-mic night is back
Have you been missing the open-mic night at the Steaming Bean Coffee Co. for the last couple of months? Well, break out your guitars or poems, because it’s back. On April 22, the coffee shop reopened after an extensive remodel. The Bean looks more modern and feels more spacious, and the staging area for open-mic night has been moved to the rear of the shop.
Owner Erica Fendley says the new setup has been good so far. “Open-mic night really came from a time when I was not drinking. I wanted to have support, and I couldn’t find a venue to experience that socially,” she said. The event starts at 7 p.m. Friday and will last until midnight, at the latest.
Celebrate bookstore independence
Record Store Day has passed, and now it’s time for Independent Bookstore Day. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Maria’s Bookshop, 960 Main Ave., 13 local authors will talk about their favorite books, as well as their own writings.
The store will be selling mystery staff picks – books chosen by Maria’s sales staff and wrapped in plain paper – at 15 percent off, and books recommended by the visiting authors will be discounted 10 percent.
Hello, Dollface
Hello, Dollface, a Durango-based band, lives to entertain people with its bluesy, jazzy, rocky vibes. Vocalist Ashley Edwards keeps the audience’s attention with her captivating voice. They have their own material, and they also like to throw in a few covers as well.
In March, they played their first show in Mexico, and they have a busy schedule ahead of them, touring the Southwest and Northwest. See them free Friday at Moe’s in Durango from 7 to 10 p.m., or from 8 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday at Millwood Junction, 101 Railroad Ave, Mancos. Tickets for the Mancos show are $10 in advance or $12 at the door.
“There will be this hip-hop, jazz kind of thing going on for us the next couple of days,” said bass player Jesse Ogle. Both nights will include special guests Chris Benavidez, a saxophone player from Phoenix, and emcee Nadereh Zelaya from New York City. Lisa Byrne will play the didgeridoo at the Mancos show.
Watch the stars dance
During the second annual Dancing with the Durango Stars, 15 couples will be cutting a rug for fun and funds at the Henry Strater Theatre. The money raised will go toward Community Connections, an organization that serves people with mental and physical disabilities in a five-county area.
“Celebrity” dancers include Amber Morris, owner of the Wildhorse Saloon, Dave Imming of Durango Fire Protection District and Ted Holteen of Ska Brewing Co.’s Super Ted’s Trivia, plus three Community Connections clients. “They’ve been practicing for four months. We have judges and videos and the audience,” said Malia Durbano, Community Connections board member and producer of the event.
Performances on Satudray are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ($15 general admission/$20 box seats) and 8:30 p.m. ($25 general admission/$30 box seats).
