Some top picks for what to do this weekend in Durango

A comedic musical

In a collaboration of talent, the music and theater departments at Fort Lewis College have joined forces to stage one of Broadway’s most successful musicals. Billed by director Ginny Davis as “Mel Brooks at his finest,” “The Producers,” is the story of two theatrical producers who scheme to get rich by overselling interests in a Broadway flop.

Davis said theater-goers can expect a show full of laughs, dancing and singing. “It’s funny ... (Mel Brooks is) an equal-opportunity offender,” Davis said, noting that “The Producers” includes mature themes that are intended for older audiences.

With a run time of about 2 hours and 15 minutes, “The Producers” will presented at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday, and again at 7:30 p.m. April 9, 10 and 11 in FLC’s Mainstage Theatre.

Tickets are free for FLC students with a current ID and $14-16 for others and can be purchased at the Durango Welcome Center, the Community Concert Hall’s ticket office or www.durangoconcerts.com.

40 of the best

It’s been done 53 years in a row, so why stop now? Fort Lewis College will open the 54th Annual Student Juried Exhibition from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at the FLC Art Gallery.

Students of all majors submitted a total of 147 works for consideration, and this year’s juror, Cristie Scott, executive director of Durango Arts Center, hand-selected 40 pieces for the show in a variety of mediums that include painting, printmaking, sculpture, graphic design, mixed media and drawing.

“We were pleasantly surprised that all of the mediums that are offered here at Fort Lewis are being represented in the show, or a lot of them,” said Andrea Martens, visiting instructor of art and interim gallery director at FLC. Four $75 prizes will be awarded for technical ability/craftsmanship, innovative use of media, concept and juror’s choice, plus a $150 award for best of show. The awards will be announced at 5 p.m. Friday, and the exhibit will be on display until April 14.

Photos from here and afar

“Random Thoughts,” an exhibit of the work of Los Angeles artist Kamil Vojnar, opens Friday in the main room of Open Shutter Gallery.

Born in 1962 during the Cold War in Moravia, Czechoslovakia, Vojnar brings a variety of mixed-media work distinguished by its colorful layering, said gallery manager and creative director Arista Slater-Sandoval.

A regular exhibitor at Open Shutter, Vojnar’s work will hang through May 6. Work from Durango High School photography students is on display in the Red Room at Open Shutter through April 29. An opening reception for both exhibits will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Three years in an Indian slum

Maybe you can’t go to Mumbai this weekend, but you can get a glimpse of the impoverished city in the National Live Theatre film “Behind the Beautiful Forevers.”

The production is based on the book by Pulitzer-prize winner Katherine Boo, who spent three years reporting in the Annawadi slum and wrote about the struggle of the people. India, the world’s second-most populated country, has seen a surge in GDP, and with that, a surge in waste, which people rummage through to make ends meet.

The film will be screened at 11 a.m. Saturday and again on April 11 at Animas City Theatre. Tickets are $13-15 and are available online at http://37901.formovietickets.com:2235 or at the door.
