Some top picks of what to do this weekend in Durango

Funkalicious rock

Elder Grown, a band of brothers and friends, will be playing with California group GrooveSession on Friday night. Joshua Hoffman, lead singer and lead guitarist for Elder Grown, says he’s heard the Durango band’s live show described as “funkalicious, rockin’ roots.” He says their main influences are U2, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Atmosphere. The band started five years ago, but the Hoffman brothers from Albuquerque – Joshua, John and Paul – started jamming together 10 years ago. They named the group after their grandmother, Marion Elder Hoffman. The band also includes Sam Kelly, James Mirabal, Josh Dikes and Brandon Clark. The 18-and-older show is $10, doors will open at 9 p.m. and the show will start at 10 p.m. at Animas City Theatre. Get tickets at Southwest Sound or at the venue.

Who says prom is only for high school students? Relive your teenage days Saturday at Animas City Theatre at its ’80s-themed “Pretty in Purple” event, which will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life fundraiser. Michele Redding, co-owner of ACT, and a few friends came up with the idea for the event after starting a Relay For Life team. Local music promoter Eugene Salaz will be there – donating his time – playing classic ’80s tunes under the guise of DJ Dayglow. Redding encourages people to come dressed in their best prom attire. Tickets are $15, and all proceeds will be donated. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 8 p.m. It’s an 18-and-older event. Animas High School’s Relay for Life team will be taking photos from 7 to 8:30 p.m. as a fundraiser for their RFL team, with 8-by-10-inch prints available for $10 and 5-by-7-inch prints for $8.

Feeling down? Well, catch a few laughs and cheer up at the Henry Strater Theatre. Two Denver-area comediennes will bring their acts to this side of Colorado on Saturday. Headliner Gretchen Hess, originally from Pittsburgh, is known for her charisma on stage and her experience as a writer and as the host of her own morning show on the Resort Sports Network. Opening for Hess will be Liz Ferron, who kickstarted her career in comedy by heckling at a club in Los Angeles. Since then, she’s done stand-up all over the country and had a stint as a house comedienne in Ocean City, Maryland. These days, she runs her own comedy club, Montana’s Smokehouse, in Avon.
