Some top picks of what to do this weekend in Durango

‘Songs of Awakening’

The Santa Fe Women’s Ensemble will join the Durango Women’s Choir for “Songs of Awakening” at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. “You’re in for an uplifting and exhilarating experience,” said Linda Mack Berven, artistic director and conductor of the Women’s Choir. The choirs will join forces and sing five pieces together. Tickets are $18 for adults and $5 for students and children. They’re available at www.durangochoralsociety.org, by calling (800) 838-3006 or at the door.

School of rock

Maybe you’ll see the next Mick Jagger or the next Stevie Nicks on Saturday at the Rochester Hotel Secret Garden. Students from Animas High School, St. Columba Middle School, Big Picture High School and Denier Youth Center will be playing original songs and covers as part of the iAM Music Institute’s end-of-the-year performance. Their selections will represent a wide range of musical styles, including classical, pop, jazz, Latin, bluegrass and folk. The show is from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday, and admission is free.

Funky improv

Dance to the grooves of the Durango Funk Allstars on Friday at the Balcony Backstage. Expect an all-original playlist from this band, which specializes in improv performance. The show begins at 10 p.m. No cover.

Not running out of gas

They’re Running Out Of Road, but they’re not running out of gas. This Durango bluegrass band has been growing in popularity and recently released its first album of songs about small-town Western life. Now is your chance to see ROOR play before they perform June 19 at the Telluride Bluegrass Band Competition. The outdoor show starts at 6 p.m. Saturday at Balcony Bar & Grill. No cover.
