State Street Ballet bring ‘Carmen’ to town
If it’s drama you’re after, you need look no further than the ballet “Carmen” – It’s got everything: Lust, love, law-breaking and ... murder. Oh, and bullfighting.
The State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara, California, the ballet company that brings “The Nutcracker” to the stage here every Christmas, is back in Durango this weekend at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College for its performance of the ballet “Carmen.”
“Carmen” is choreographed by William Soleau, choreographer of more than 20 ballets for the company. In this production, Soleau breaks down the “fourth wall” of the stage – an imaginary boundary between the people on stage and the audience – allowing audience members to move from passive spectators to more voyeuristic participants in the unfolding drama – the perfect way to engage an audience in all this drama.

The Transplants play the Goat
Bayfield band The Transplants are rocking the Billy Goat on Friday night.
Band members Kellie Lillyquist on vocals; Chuck Blaser on acoustic guitar and keyboard; Jesse Horton on acoustic and electric guitar; Dan Hancock on bass and John Barker on drums will help you start your weekend off right with their brand of progressive rock and funk.
The show starts at 8:30 p.m. at the Billy Goat Saloon, 39848 U.S. Highway 160 in Bayfield.
Crash Music mixing it up with live music, art
Music and art will collide in a cool mash-up Saturday night at Crash Music, 104 N. Main Ave., in Aztec.
The Afrobeatniks have the music side covered: They will be getting down with their Afro-pop, reggae and funk and will throw in a little rock for good measure. On the live art front, artists will be setting up their stuff and getting down to business creating pieces during the night.
Artists will include Michael Gautier, Beth McClure, Tirzah Camacho, Crystal Hazen, Meredith Rose and Dan Groth.
And when the show’s over, the artists will display their creations at Crash for the next month.
Doors will open at 7:30 p.m., and food and drinks will be available for purchase.
