Some top picks of things to do this weekend in Durango

Harvest time

Southern California reggae band Tribal Seeds is will kick off its fall tour in Durango with a show at 9 p.m. today at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive. The six-piece band, founded by brothers Steven Rene and Tony-Ray Jacobo, brings a feel-good, mellow-moods vibe to the stage with spiritually driven roots reggae songs about love, cosmos and sacred herb. Tribal Seeds will be joined by Ballyhoo! and Gonzo with Beyond I Sight. The show is sold out. Visit www.animascitytheatre.com for more information.

The biggest name in comedy

The Henry Strater Theatre is bringing the biggest name in comedy to its stage Saturday. Literally. Costaki Economopoulos (that’s 20 letters!) will bring his wry and socially relevant humor to the Strater for two sets of funny stuff. The stand-up comedian, who has written jokes for Jay Leno, Bette Midler and The Best Damn Sports Show Period, is probably best known for The Ecomonologue, a weekly segment on the syndicated Bob & Tom Radio Show. The national exposure, he says, has opened the door to his ultimate dream: People coming to see his live performances “on purpose.” Economopoulos, who touches on topics that range from parenting and politics to pirates and vegetarian meatballs, will perform at 7:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Visit www.henrystratertheatre.com for more information.

He and She

The Durango Choral Society is starting off its season with a battle of the singing sexes that will entail everything from Broadway hits to wild spirituals and ancient chants. The “He & She” concert, an annual tradition for Durango singers, will take place at 7 p.m. today at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave. The Durango Women’s Choir will represent the fairer sex, while the Fort Lewis College Men’s Choir will provide the lower notes. Some highlights of the night: a world premiere of a folk song written by Durango Choral Society Associate Conductor C. Scott Hagler, poetry put to song, a Gershwin piano duet and performances from soloists such as Laurie Barker, Elizabeth Crawford and Adam Sowards. Durango Choral Society Artistic Director Linda Mack Berven said it will be a great night of music no matter what genre of music you favor. “Everybody always looks forward to this because it’s so much fun,” she said. “This is our town celebrating the amazing talent of these men from the college and the women’s choir.” A reception will be held after the music. Tickets are $18 for adults and $6 for students and children and are available at (800) 838-3006 or at the door.
