The Weekender

Some top picks of things to do this weekend in Durango

By the seat of their pants

A handful of actors, a couple of audience suggestions and a hilarious evening of wacky long-form improvisation. That’s what’s on tap today at the Durango Arts Center when Creede Repertory Theatre’s Boomtown Improv takes the stage. Boomtown Improv is swinging through Durango for two evening performances that promise unscripted entertainment at its best. Roughly 10 actors and a keyboard player, armed only with their wits and overactive imaginations, will lead the audience on a journey that will make itself up as it goes along. The performances will take place at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at DAC, 802 East Second Ave. Tickets are $10 for DAC members and $15 for nonmembers, and are available at www.durangoarts.tix.com or by calling 259-2606, ext. 19.

For the wolves

Wolfwood, the La Plata County nonprofit organization that rescues and shelters wolfdogs, is holding an art event to benefit the animals Saturday. The third annual Wolfwood Art Auction will take place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. The gala event will feature food and drinks, a silent auction of goods and services and a live auction of fine art pieces by regional artists like John Grow, Joyce Heuman, Claude Steelman, Susan Reed and Ann Smith. A handful of ambassador wolfdogs will also be on hand to represent Wolfwood and meet patrons. Wolfwood owner and director Paula Watson said the event comes together through the donations of the artists, volunteers, food and liquor purveyors, and the money will go entirely to the 62 animals currently being housed at the shelter. “It’s really a neat, neat night,” Watson said, “Raising money for the animals. Durango’s a very generous community.” Tickets are $25 and are available at Maria’s Bookshop or at the door.

Fiesta at the Fort

Cumbia music, folklorico dancers, piñata bashing and the echo of gritos. Fort Lewis College’s FLC Amphitheatre will be the scene of a colorful cultural celebration Monday afternoon when the college’s Fiesta on the Mesa gets underway. The party, which will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. at the amphitheater, will feature a performance by Ballet Folklorico de Durango, a piñata for kids, live music by popular Mexican norteño band Grupo Control, handcrafted items, an authentic meal provided by Sodexo and the annual grito contest – which awards the person with the loudest and most authentic Mexican shout. The event, which kicks off FLC’s monthlong celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, is free to all FLC students, faculty and staff members with ID. For community members, the meal will cost $8 for adults and $4 for children younger than 10. For more information, visit www.fortlewis.edu/elcentro.

Tiny ambassadors

On Saturday, 40 young singers from across the world will take the stage at the Community Concert Call, 1000 Rim Drive, for an evening of song and praise. The Korean Children’s Choir features performers ages 7-13 in a choir that was organized as a ministry of the Far East Broadcasting Company in Korea. The children are accompanying evangelist Dr. Billy Kim and guest speaker Gigi Graham, daughter of Billy Graham, who will also be giving an ecumenical service Sunday. Along with performing at the Concert Hall, the children will be visiting Mercy Regional Medical Center staff members and patients and nursing home residents. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and are available at www.durangoconcerts.com.
