Things to do in and around Durango

The Great Contention brings Americana to The RanchLike many Americana bands in these here parts, the music of The Great Contention floats between genres: bluegrass, folk, blues and alt-country. There’s one thing that is certain: The group can get a little dark. Ironic when one of the founding member’s first name is Sunny.

The quartet, made up of Joshua Standard (guitar/vocals), Sunny Gable (fiddle/mandolin/vocals), Guy Ewing (bass) and Jeff Moorehead (dobro/banjo), plays at 9 p.m. Saturday El Rancho Tavern, 975 Main Ave.

The group, which formed last summer, showcases lyrics that touch on the realness of love and revenge, heartbreak or the grind of work. But they’re not one dimensional with their moods, providing plenty of harmony and uptempo tunes that define their genres.
