Two dreamy shows at Open Shutter
Imagine a place where time, space, era and the laws of physics are fluid, where a flying dove carries a birdcage occupied by a strongman, where men paddle rowboats on the side of lush green hills, where children and soldiers don nightmarish animal masks.
It’s a world that exists only inside the mind of Boston artist Fran Forman. Her dreamy, surreal photo collages will be on display beginning today at Open Shutter Gallery in a show called “Out from Under,” along with new work from Durango artist Arista Slater-Sandoval, who opens a show titled “Segmentations” in the gallery’s Red Room.
Slater-Sandoval’s autobiographical photo transfers and alternative photographic processes layer images of landscapes, locales and objects with varying degrees of transparency. The distressed nature of the photo transfers gives each image a nostalgic and ethereal feel.
Both shows are free and run through Oct. 14. An artist reception will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. today, where Forman will sign her new book, Escape Artist.
Adventure race at Purgatory
If climbing rock walls and cargo nets, crawling through tunnels, sliding through mudholes and swimming through mucky ponds is your thing, Saturday’s Muck & Mire Mud Adventure Race at Purgatory is for you.
The event, now in its fourth year, features a 5K family race and a 10K competitive race, billed for “serious athletes” looking to test their physical and mental endurance with more than 20 down-and-dirty obstacles and challenges on the mountain.
Following the race will be live music by The Chava People and a Steamworks beer garden. 7065TheKids Mini Muck & Mire Mud Run5

DAC bustling with two events
Durango Arts Center will be downright bustling this weekend with family-fare theater as well as an exhibit to showcase the range of artistic talent and ideas from all corners of the Durango area.
One hundred and nine artists submitted work for DAC’s annual members show (almost double from last year’s show) and virtually every artistic medium will be represented (except film...sorry film). This year’s theme is “The Natural World: A Fragile Harmony, and in their submitted work, members were encouraged to “explore relationships, respond to environments and sources of inspiration, and connect to their sense of wonder,” according to the call for submissions.
The free show runs through Sept. 20 with an opening reception today from 5 to 7 p.m.
Down the hall at DAC will be the Applause! performing art camp productions of “101 Dalmatians, Kids” and “Once on this Island, Jr.” at 1 and 7 p.m. today and 1 p.m. Aug. 8.
Children ages 4 to 6 will recreate the Disney story of the “101 Dalmatians” and children ages 11 to 16, will perform “Once on this Island, Jr.,” based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Little Mermaid.
Tickets are $8 and can be purchased at DAC at 802 E. 2nd Avenue, online at www.DurangoArts.tix.com or by calling the DAC Box Office at (970) 259-2606.
