Things to do in and around Durango

Afrobeatniks taking stage at the BalconyThe Afrobeatniks have had a pretty busy summer, playing the iAM MUSIC Fest, opening for Michael Franti and Spearhead and what seems like shows and festivals just about every weekend.

And this weekend is no different.

Check out the group at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Balcony Backstage, upstairs at 600 Main Ave.

The Afrobeatniks will have you dancing all night with their passion for the rhythms of African, Brazilian, Latin jazz, reggae, Afro-Cuban and other genres. They say that Nigerian Afro-pop in the style of Fela Kuti, fused with traditional folkloric rhythm-structures of Guinea, West Africa, serves as the vehicle to launch their original songs and the handful of covers they perform.

There’s no cover charge.

Tired of watching? Join in!Got a ukulele but don’t have anyone to play with? Head downtown Sunday afternoon for the Durango Ukulele Jam at Magpie’s Newsstand, 707 Main Ave., and play with a group.

Starting at 4 p.m., join in for some strumming, singing, harmonizing and picking – Just bring a ukulele and a song to share.
