Traditional ‘Nutcracker’ offers a twist this year

Nothing helps kick off the holiday season more than the tradition of getting all dressed up, maybe grabbing lunch or dinner downtown and then heading up to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College for the annual presentation of the “Nutcracker” ballet.

And, in keeping with tradition, the ballet will again be performed by the State Street Ballet of Santa Barbara – but with a twist. This year, for the first time, accompanying the dancers will be live music played by the San Juan Symphony Orchestra.

There will be two matinees and two evening performances: 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Tickets are $26-$39 and are available at www.durangoconcerts.tix.com.

For more information, call 247-7657.

The Music Man at DAC

If it’s theater you’re looking for this weekend (and next), check out the production of “The Music Man” at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

“The Music Man” is the tale of a smooth-talking con man who drops into a small town in Iowa and heaves trouble with a capital “T” on its residents.

With a cast made up of more than 40 kids and adult actors, and an appearance by members of the Durango Barbershop Club, “The Music Man” is a true community collaboration.

Showtimes are 7 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Dec. 18 and Dec. 19; and 1 p.m. Saturday and Dec. 19.

Tickets cost $12 for DAC members 13 and older; $10 for 12 and younger; and $15 for non-members.

For more information or to buy tickets over the phone, call 259-2606.

How Bizarre Bazaar

Tired of dragging your sorry carcass around to the nearest big-box to pick up a quick (and, chances are, incredibly meaningless but super-convenient) gift for someone you supposedly like? Time to change your ways, wayward consumer, and put a little thought into your holiday gift-giving.

Lucky for you, Studio & can help you mend your Made in China, plastic ways with its Bizarre Bazaar, which will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the studio, 1027 Main Ave.

Featuring 25 local artists selling their wares directly to you, you can buy awesome, unique gifts and can leave with a little extra spring in your step in the knowledge that with your purchase, you have done your part to support both local artists and the local economy. Neat.

The Bazaar’s hours will be 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, so get down there and get that shopping done.
