Magic To Do
A young prince longing for something more sets out on an adventure, and his journey leads to warfare, love, loss and betrayal. Add in a troupe of freaky circus performers and some catchy show tunes, and you’ve got the Durango Arts Center’s 2014 summer musical, “Pippin.” Director Dennis Elkins and a cast that includes local actors Kenneth Breece and Adam Sowards will bring the Tony Award-winning musical revival – a story of self-discovery known for its carnival theatrics and dark undercurrents – to the DAC stage every weekend through Aug. 16. The production will open its season at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. Tickets are $22 for DAC members and $25 general admission and are available at www.durangoarts.org.
Mac and Cheese, please
A longtime staple of humble comfort food will be elevated to new, gourmet heights from 2-6 p.m. Saturday at the Durango Mac & Cheese Festival. The event, a fundraiser for the Children’s Miracle Network put on by American General Media, will feature an afternoon of mac & cheese tasting, spirit sampling, live music and culinary competition at Durango Mountain Resort. Food purveyors like 6512’ Restaurant, Chimayo Stone Fired Kitchen, East by Southwest and The Ore House will be whipping up their most inspired versions of mac & cheese, which participants can wash down with beer, wine or spirits from Durango Brewing Co, Bottom Shelf Brewery and others. The Cerny Brothers and Hello Dollface will provide live music, and for those who have had their fill of macaroni, there will be gourmet cheese, olive oil and gelato. Tickets for the 21-and-older event are $45. Durango Rivertrippers and Mild to Wild Rafting will provide shuttle service from the Durango High School parking lot, 2390 Main Ave., starting at 1 p.m.,
Fairy tale under the stars
Summer is ramping up in Durango, but for those who want to get transported to a frozen land of talking snowmen, icy queens and goofy reindeer, the Disney smash movie “Frozen” will screen tonight as part of the Three Springs Outdoor Movie Night series. The free film will start at dusk in Three Springs Plaza, 175 Mercado St. People are invited to bring blankets, chairs or picnics for the screening under the stars, and the Ignacio High School cheerleaders will be selling concessions.
