Is there a better place to celebrate the Fourth of July than Durango? With all the downtown activities, the annual parade and fireworks, accompanied by the beautiful scenery, it’s easy to make the Fourth a memorable holiday here. The city goes above and beyond to help both residents and visitors celebrate Independence Day. The list goes on and on, and there’s something for everyone.

Start your Fourth right with an all-American breakfast at Rotary Park, between the Animas River Trail and Animas Brewing Co. There you’ll find all your favorite foods, including eggs, pancakes, sausage and drinks. Food will be served from 7:30 to 11 a.m., and tickets, which are $10 for adults and $5 for kids, can be bought at the event.

After you’re done eating a hearty meal, you can run or walk off those excess calories in the Freedom 5K along the Animas River Trail. You don’t need to be the next Steve Prefontaine – everyone is invited to this healthy event, which begins at 9 a.m. at Rotary Park.

After the 5K, American Voices will celebrate the United States’ 239th birthday with a reading of the country’s founding documents starting at 11 a.m. at Buckley Park, the first of several family-friendly events and activities taking place at the park until 5 p.m. Others include a bouncy house for kids, face-painting, live classic rock by Patrick Decker at noon, reggae by Magi Nation at 1 p.m., the Magi Magic Act and Catch it Quick Juggling at 3 p.m. and bluegrass band Mountaintop Pocket Pickers at 4 p.m. Also at Buckley Park, kids will be able to sell their toys, sports gear and more at the Kids to Kids Flea Market.
