Things to do in and around Durango

KDUR has you covered Saturday night

Local bands will bring you their take on the music of Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground at KDUR’s Cover Night on Saturday at the Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Dr.

Lou Reed had an immense music career spanning decades, both as a solo artist and as leader of the relatively short-lived Velvet Underground. His gritty, progressive style of music and lyrics took on issues others were unwilling to touch – drug use, homosexuality, etc.

Bands planning to take the stage include The Sweet Janes, Papa Otis, The Crags, Farmington Hill, Lawn Chair Kings and more.

Doors open at 7 and the show is set to start at 8.

Tickets for the 18-and-older show are $5 at the door, with proceeds going to support KDUR.

For more information, call 799-2281.

In the mood for bluegrass?

If it’s bluegrass you have a hankering for this weekend, check out longtime local favorites The Badly Bent, who will perform with special guest Last Nickel on Friday night at Henry Strater Theatre, 699 Main Ave.

Durango’s Badly Bent has been a fixture on the bluegrass scene since 1998 and includes members Cindi Trautmann (vocals and fiddle); Patrick Dressen (vocals and guitar); Mark Epstein (vocals, banjo and dobro); Jim Stanley (vocals and bass); and Fred Hoeffler (vocals and mandolin).

Last Nickel hails from Dolores and blurs the line between traditional and modern bluegrass and Americana.

Doors will open at 6 p.m., and the show will kick off at 6:30 Friday

Tickets are $10/$12 and are available at Animas Trading CO.

Local music showcase for a cause

If you’ve ever been to a musical performance and gotten goose bumps from a voice or guitar or drum, or have been so moved by a song or album you’ve played it repeatedly, you have music education to thank. And here in Durango, we have a program that is providing some pretty cool music-education opportunities for both kids and adults. But running a program to help teach people to become musicians doesn’t come cheap.

And this is where you come in.

On Friday and Saturday night, there will be a local music showcase at the Balcony Backstage to benefit music education organization The Stillwater Foundation. You’ll see all kinds of genres represented: from the rock/Latin/funk of the Groove Casters to Magi Nation’s reggae to the electrofusion-funk-jam of Sky Pilot.

Friday night’s lineup includes: DJ Mateo, Oblee, Magi Nation, Sky Pilot and DJ Mateo. On Saturday, you can catch DJ Mateo, Jade Robbins Project, Groove Casters and the Durango Funk Allstars (Stillwater faculty).

Both nights will run from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Advance tickets are available at Katzin Music and Southwest Sound – $10 gets you a weekend pass.
