Storytelling festival showcases traditional tales

Continuing the oral traditions of passing down stories, the annual Four Corners Storytelling Festival returns to scenic Berg Park in Farmington Friday and Saturday. Evening performances are located at the Totah Theater.

The festival will showcase tall tales, short tales, epics, traditional tales of the Navajo, Hispanic cuentos (stories) and even some cowboy poetry, told by renown national and local storytellers.

Two full days of stories, will touch on a variety of cultures for audiences of all ages. The free event will feature the talents of Joe Hayes, Len Cabral, Dovie Thomason, Susan O’Halloran and Sid Hausman, with special youth MC and storytellers opening up each storytelling performance.

Record enthusiasts to converge for swap meet

Music lovers unite! Southwest Sound will host a record swap at VFW Post 4031 Saturday, and is joining forces with 25 vendors, including radio stations KDUR and KSUT.

Vinyl enthusiasts will have the chance to meet to sell and swap music, including vinyl, CDs and other music-related items.

Arrive early to get the good stuff before it’s gone. Early admission is from 9 to 10 a.m. for $5. Admission is $2 after 10 a.m. Those interested in selling music-related items can contact Southwest Sound to purchase a dealer table for $30.

Durango Choral Society kicks off season

The dream lives on for the Durango Choral Society, as it kicks off its 2015-16 season with a concert that embodies the nature and mission of the arts.

The group will make history as it presents the world premiere of David Lingle’s work, “Requiem for Eagles.” Lingle, who died in 2013, was the Telluride Choral Society Director for more than seven years. A rough, unfinished “Requiem for Eagles” was acquired by the Telluride and Durango Choral Societies and has been adapted for performance.

The performance will feature 90 singers, along with a 21-piece chamber orchestra from both communities.

The concert, entitled “The Dream Lives,” Friday at St. Columba Catholic Church. Tickets are $20 for adults, $5/students and children and are available wwww.durangochoralsociety.org, at 1-800-838-3006 and at the door.
