Pickin’ up steam
This might be the only musical experience that is guaranteed to move you. And we do mean that quite literally.
The Durango Blues Train is back for two nights this weekend with live music aboard the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Saturday’s train is sold out, so act fast to get tickets for tonight’s train – did you just hear that train whistle sound?
The three-hour roundtrip from downtown Durango to Rockwood will depart at 7 p.m. and showcases six bands/musicians, including acclaimed Minnesota picker Charlie Parr, who just released his 13th album, “Stumpjumper.” Rounding out the lineup are Mark May Band, The King Stan Band, Possessed By Paul James, Reverend Deadeye and Big Jim Adam.
Aboard the train you can walk freely between cars, both open-air and closed, with plenty of room for dancing and beer, wine and snacks for purchase.
Tickets are $95 and are available at www.durangobluestrain.com, along with more information.
Saturday fun, guy
Combining the words “wine,” “beer” and “festival” usually is enough to attract most people. Add the word “mushroom” and it nearly becomes a must-attend.
On Saturday, you can foray on up to Purgatory Resort for the Mushroom, Wine & Beer Festival to sample mushroom-inspired dishes from El Moro, Guido’s, Fired Up Pizzeria, Sow’s Ear, Ore House, Purgy’s and Cream Bean Berry, each paired with wine or beer.
Also on tap will be cooking demonstrations, presentations by mushroom experts and live music from The Assortment.
Tickets are $50, and advance purchase is recommended. Go to www.purgatoryresort.com/events/2015-mushroom-festival/ for tickets and more information.
The art of books
These aren’t your everyday books. They’re not even your everyday art books, and they would put most pop-up books to shame. The artists’ books to be showcased by Alicia Bailey are something else altogether: Works of art in the form of books, meticulously crafted, textured and interactive, testing the boundaries and conventions of shape and form.
Bailey will bring her traveling show of 40 artists’ books to Durango Arts Center’s Barbara Conrad Gallery from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday. The free, open-house-style event is appropriate for all ages.
